Centipede

Appearance

The house centipede adult has 15 pair of legs with the last pair (on adult females) nearly twice the length of the body, which is one to one and one-half inches in length. This gives the centipede an overall appearance of being from three to four inches in length (including legs and antennae). The legs are banded light and dark, and the body is a dirty yellow with three longitudinal, dark stripes.

Habitat

Most centipedes can be found under boards, logs, rocks and other protected, damp locations outside.

Activity

During the daytime, the centipedes inhabit dark, damp locations in the home and come out at night to forage for prey. It does not survive winters outdoors in Boise, but readily reproduces in heated structures.

What are centipedes?

Centipedes are small, creepy-crawly creatures that can be found in many homes across the United States. They range in size from a few millimeters to a few centimeters, and they have long, slender bodies with many legs. Centipedes range in color from brown to red or sometimes black, and they have a pair of long, poisonous claws that they use to capture their prey. They are often mistaken for millipedes. However, centipedes have only one pair of legs per body segment, while millipedes have two pairs. Centipedes are most active at night, when they search for food. During the day, they hide in dark, damp places like basements and closets. If you think you have centipedes in your home, give Bigfoot a call. We'll be happy to help you get rid of them!

Why do I have a centipede problem?

First, centipedes are attracted to moisture, so if your home is especially damp or humid, it may be more susceptible to an infestation. Second, centipedes feed on other insects, so if your property is already infested with pests like ants or silverfish, the centipedes will have plenty to eat. Finally, centipedes need a dark place to hide during the day, so if your home has lots of nooks and crannies for them to hide in, it may be more likely to attract these pests.
